At the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation, the scholarship judging process is both an exciting and draining one. Draining in that selecting scholarship recipients from a group of such qualified and impressive students is never easy. But exciting knowing that these scholarships will put our community’s students on the path to lifelong learning and success. In this blog post, we’ll share some notable scholarship highlights from this year’s group.
This year, due to the generosity and dedication of our partners and community, we are thrilled to be able to award 116 scholarships for over $530,000. While the criteria for scholarships varies slightly based on the scholarship in question, in general, applicants are judged based on activities/leadership (25%), academics (25%), and financial need (50%). One scholarship we’d like to mention is the InterLinc Family Foundation Scholarship. Two deserving students were selected for this generous scholarship of $32,000 each. Another scholarship to mention is the Edwin C. Schroeder Trust Scholarships. These scholarships are awarded to students who attend Lone Star College. We have 49 Schroeder Scholars this year.
While we are excited to see all that our scholarship recipients will achieve in college and beyond, the past is a great predictor of what is to come. For example, one of our many success stories, Mindy Harper, was awarded a scholarship in 1993. She began her career as an attorney at the distinguished law firm Fulbright & Jaworski, LLP, and is now vice president and senior litigation counsel for MFRM Family of Brands. Mindy described the scholarship she received as one of the most exciting moments of her life. We wish her continued success in her legal career!
Quality education strengthens our community by providing our businesses with competent employees and developing strong leaders. If you are interested in shaping the future of next year’s scholarship recipients, we encourage you to donate online or call Marie Holmes, our executive director, at (281) 370-0144 for information about establishing an endowment. There are many ways for you to contribute based on what is most convenient for you. We’ll leave you with a testimonial from one of our scholarship recipients from Langham Creek in 2004: “Your foundation has helped finance one of the greatest gifts in life, education, one of the few priceless assets in life…”—Susheela Amrita Patwari.
