One of Cy-Fair Educational Foundation’s most popular and exciting events is turning twenty years old this year! Join CFEF on October 19, 2017, to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Salute to the Stars.

‘Salute to the Stars’ is an annual recognition of Cy-Fair ISD’s very best teachers and a special way to honor their hard work. One teacher from every campus is selected for recognition as representing a unique balance of skill, art, and heart. Since its inception in 1998, the Salute to the Stars event has raised almost $3 million for Foundation programs.

Salute to the Stars Grows

Salute to the Stars gets bigger and better each year, and 2017 is no exception. This year the event will be moving to the Berry Center Arena to accommodate the opening of three new schools and recognition of four para educators and support staff.

We’re honored to welcome Salvatore “Sal” Augustine Giunta as our speaker for the 10th Anniversary of our Salute to Our Heroes Gala. Giunta was awarded the Medal of Honor by President Barack Obama on November 16, 2010. Staff Sgt. Giunta was the first living recipient of the Medal of Honor for service in Iraq or Afghanistan, and the first living service member to be awarded the Medal of Honor since the Vietnam War.

Giunta joined the Army in November 2003 and was assigned to the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, Vicenza, Italy. He completed two combat tours in Afghanistan. While conducting a patrol as team leader, Giunta and his team were ambushed by a well-armed, well-coordinated team of insurgents in Korengal Valley on October 25, 2007. Under intense fire, Giunta fought the enemy, administered first aid to his wounded squad leader, and saved another soldier from being carried away by the Taliban.

Awarding student scholarships provides CFISD students with an opportunity to achieve their educational goals. Although many CFEF scholarships are funded annually through endowments, increasing scholarships awarded in the future depends on the generous financial support we receive from the community.

“An investment in the future of a deserving youth is the best investment a person can make,” said Robert Adam, a CFEF donor who has given $1M in endowed scholarships through the Foundation.

In 2016, CFEF gave a total of 107 scholarships totaling $358,000; click to see a full list of CFEF scholarships, including:

  • Cy-Fair Educational Foundation Assistance Scholarships
  • Cypress Running Club Scholarship
  • Adam Jackson Skinner Memorial Scholarship
  • Eric Bassett Memorial Scholarship
  • Christopher & Elizabeth Gilbert Endowment

About Endowed Scholarships

We call endowment funds “the gift that keeps on giving” because it is a perpetual gift, with interest being used to fund scholarships while the principle investment continues to grow. Click to view our endowment criteria, including:

  • Endowments may be established in the amounts of $20,000, $50,000, $100,000, or more.
  • Endowments will be named for private individuals, corporations, and organizations, in memory of and in honor of individuals.
  • All endowments have seven years to fund.
  • Endowments will be designed with the Foundation’s minimum criteria and may also include special criteria.

Our online list of Endowment Partners is always being updated; click to view our most current list of CFEF Endowment Partners.

When you sponsor a CFEF event like the B.F. Adam Golf Classic, or give a gift through any of our CFEF donation programs, you help us equip CFISD students with scholarships—but that donation is just the start.

Who is a CFEF scholarship student, and how does your donation impact their life? Today’s Scholarship Spotlight shines on two CFEF scholarship recipients: Jessica & David Claros.

Jessica and David are siblings and Cy-Fair natives, and each exemplifies the qualities of a CFEF scholar—hard working, dedicated, committed. Today both Jessica and David work for Caldwell Companies, but their journey began as Cy-Fair ISD students seeking financial support to attend college and pursue their dreams.

About Jessica

Scholarship Recipient Jessica ClarosA CFEF Cecil B. Hall Scholarship helped Jessica attend Texas A&M University, where she graduated with a BS in Interdisciplinary Studies in 2007. As part of a ‘full-circle journey’, Jessica returned to Cy-Fair ISD as a teacher, inspiring her elementary school students in the classroom for seven years. In 2012 Jessica was recognized as a Spotlight Teacher of the Year; in 2013, she spoke about her experience as a scholarship recipient and a spotlight teacher at CFEF’s Salute to the Stars.

Since March 2015 Jessica has worked as executive assistant to Fred Caldwell, of Caldwell Companies; Caldwell is a CFEF Trustee and Endowment Partner, as well as a Foundation Partner. In her spare time Jessica likes to stay active, which includes training for and participating in triathlons. Jessica has been known to race for a cause, raising scholarship funds for the Outback Texas Ministry.

About David

Scholarship Recipient David ClarosLike his sister, David’s path led from Cy-Fair ISD to Texas A&M. After graduating from Cy-Fair High School, a $7,000 CFEF scholarship helped David attend and graduate from Texas A&M in 2012 with a BS in Construction Management, and a minor in business. After college, David worked his way up at Palm Harbor Homes before being hired as a Commercial Real Estate Broker for Caldwell Companies in College Station. Today David lives and works in Houston, focusing on industrial real estate in the city’s Northwest-West Houston markets.

In the 29 years since the B.F. Adam Golf Classic was first held, more than $2.7 million has been raised to fund CFEF efforts to provide CFISD students with scholarships. Improving access to college and positively impacting quality of life in our community are the foundation of our vision. Over the course of our 46 year history, we have awarded more than $7 million in scholarships and $2 million in staff development grants.

But we can’t do it without you.

We would love for you to join us on the course, and we invite you to explore ways to support the event as an official sponsor. We also hope you will consider making a digital donation, particularly if your schedule prevents you from attending; we still count on your support.
